Because of their great size and height, male sauropods probably possessed a large, mammalian-like external penis instead of an internal, temporarily extrudable one positioned inside a pocket of the anterior cloacal wall, as in crocodilians and some avian archosaurs. Like those of elephants and whales, it would have been independently motile in seeking and penetrating the female’s cloaca. On ejaculation from a bubo-seminal gland at the base of the penis, the seminal fluid would have been projected into one or both of the female’s oviducts, which opened into the cloaca.
